ComingSoon.net sat in on an edit bay session with director Chris Nolan for The Prestige and the helmer talked a bit about both his blockbuster hit Batman Begins and its upcoming sequel, The Dark Knight. Nolan said he was very surprised by Batman Begins' success, "for the simple reason that I felt we had really poured our hearts out in making a good film and that on our own terms we had succeeded. I never really expected to satisfy critics and Batman fans and regular audiences equally. I mean I thought maybe we'd get two points on the drawing board if you like, but the fact that all three seemed to respond well, that was a big surprise to me. I mean it felt like you were going to lose one aspect or someone… I think we were very fortunate in that regard, it's very gratifying." Talking about the follow-up, in which Heath Ledger will play The Joker opposite Christian Bale, he mentioned that they're changing things up. "I think what people responded to well about 'Batman Begins' is how different it was from their expectations so I think we would be foolish to not recognize that and to [try to replicate that now predictable blueprint]. I think we'll be doing something very different for the sequel. I certainly wouldn't have any interest in trying to repeat experience or the formula we've made, because particularly being the origin story, it's a very unique thing, a very singular experience. My interest would sort of be to move on from that and to do something quite different." The Dark Knight is coming in June of 2008. The Prestige, starring Hugh Jackman, Bale, Michael Caine, Scarlett Johansson, Rebecca Hall, Andy Serkis, Piper Perabo and David Bowie, opens October 20. Source: ComingSoon.net

Sahamongkol is probably the biggest and most internationally successful production company in Thailand with ONG BAK, TOM YUM GONG, and BORN TO FIGHT all under their belts. But they seem to have hit a run of bad luck lately. First there was the infighting surrounding the Federation of the National Film Association earlier this year which saw the head of Sahamongkol, Somsak Techratanaprasert, dealt a resounding vote of no confidence in his role as head of the FNFA and he stepped down from his role there. Then came their movie, CHAI LAI'S ANGELS, a Thai "girls with guns" flick that did okay business at the box office but is excruciating to watch. This month saw them release MERCURY MAN, a big budget Thai superhero movie (budgeted at about US$1.1 million, which is twice the budget of most Thai films). The film was given a mild sniff by local critics and bowed with a first week gross of 12 million baht (about US$320,000) which is a disappointing figure for all invovled. Director Bandid Thongdee says, "Maybe Thai audience still doubt whether a homegrown superhero will be as exciting to watch as 'Spider-man' or 'Superman'. However, we believe that the film has a strong potential for international sales." Whether it sinks or finds its legs and swims, MERCURY MAN is Sahamongkol's centerpiece of its international sales plan. This is all reminiscent of the early 2000's when Hong Kong companies where risking the farm on big, international productions that weren't Hong Kong enough to excite foreign buyers, but were too international to really make it at home. Now, Sahamongkol has become the latest company caught in the "My movie has offended someone," sweepstakes. First it was GHOST GAME, then it was LUCKY LOSER, and now it's CADAVER. Originally called AJAAN YAI, a term of respect for a body donated to science, this aroused the ire of a bunch of doctors. So the movie has now changed its name to SOPE, or "Corpse." Wisekwai posts this statement from Sahamongkol: "We're doing everything we can to comply with the requests of the group in order to be able to release the film on schedule," the Sahamongkol Film marketing director Awika Techaratanaprasert is quoted as saying. "We have already called back all the promotional materials they found offensive and have put out information to make it clear that this is a work of fiction, not a true story." You can see a trailer of CADAVER here and judge for yourself. Source: Kaiju Shakedown
Maurice ($LA$HER$) Devereaux’s new subway-terror film End of the Line premiering at the upcoming Toronto Film Festival, and the movie now has screening dates set: Saturday, September 9 at 9 p.m. and Monday, September 11 at 3 p.m. And Devereaux tells Fango that he’s looking for a few good men and women to help promote End of the Line in return for free passes to the showings. “I’m seeking horror-fan volunteers who live in Toronto to do a publicity stunt for End of the Line,” he says. “It would entail dressing up as characters from the film and handing out flyers to push the screenings and generate publicity and buzz. Volunteers would work for a few hours on Friday, September 8 and Saturday, September 9; in return they would each get two free tickets to one of the screenings, an autographed poster and, once it is released, a DVD. “I need about 10 men—with cleancut, short hair preferably—and 10 women,” he continues. “Candidates must be 18 and over, reliable, very outgoing, friendly and not afraid to interact with strangers. If you’re shy, don’t bother, as you will be asked to sing in public while marching downtown holding signs and giving out flyers. Interested candidates can e-mail endofthelinefilm@yahoo.com with their photos, contact information, the reasons why they would be motivated to participate in this project and a brief résumé of any performance-related experience they might have.” Source: Fango

When The Grudge 2 was getting ready to undergo re-shoots in Chicago, the word came down that another Ghost House pic, The Messengers, was going back in front of cameras as well, though not under the direction of its original helmers, The Pang Brothers. The people over at Dread Central are not sure who it was that directed the new footage or if it was done with the consent of the Brothers, who were likely too busy in their native Hong Kong to come back to the U.S. for re-shoots, but apparently Raimi and crew are very happy with the finished results. The film will be released by Sony on January 19, 2007. Click here for The Messengers official website. Source: Dread Central

7 New wickerman clips have popped up online. Out patrolling a California highway, police officer Edward Malus (Nicolas Cage) stops a station wagon to return a little girl's lost doll. Moments later, a runaway truck slams into the station wagon, igniting it into a fiery wreck with the mother and child trapped inside. Edward fails to save them before the car explodes...and then spends months of his life choking down pills to get the image of their faces out of his head. But Edward is about to get a second chance. A desperate letter from his former girlfriend, Willow (Kate Beahan), arrives at his home with no postmark. Willow came into his life and left just as unexpectedly years before. But now, her daughter Rowan has gone missing, and Edward is the only person she trusts to help locate her. She asks him to come to her home on a private island - Summersisle - a place with its own traditions where people observe a forgotten way of life. Edward seizes the opportunity to make his life right again, and soon finds himself on a seaplane bound for the islands of the Pacific Northwest. But nothing is what it seems on isolated Summersisle, where a culture, dominated by its matriarch Sister Summersisle (Ellen Burstyn), is bound together by arcane traditions and a pagan festival called "the Day of Death and Rebirth." The secretive people of Summersisle only ridicule his investigation, insisting that a child named Rowan never existed there... or if she ever did was no longer alive. But what Edward doesn't know is that Willow's plea for help has invited more into his life than a chance for redemption. In unraveling Summersisle's closely held secrets, Edward is drawn into a web of ancient traditions and murderous deceit, and each step he takes closer to the lost child brings him one step closer to the unspeakable. And one step closer to the Wicker Man. Go here to watch the clips! Source: MoviesOnline.ca

The first scene of Saw III that were going to be shown exclusively in conjunction with the movie Crank will not be shown since the clip was too graphic. Lionsgate was planning on attaching the entire first scene of the film SAW III to the feature prints of CRANK, but the footage proved too intense for exhibition. Lionsgate is investigating an AgeGate/age appropriate online outlet to debut the footage. This is the first time in Lionsgate’s history to preview an entire scene prior to its release and is especially unique due to the popularity of this highly acclaimed franchise. While we’re not allowed to reveal too many details, we do know that the scene showcases the first of Jigsaw’s games and will definitely satisfy fan’s craving for blood. Hopefully it gets sorted out. New Line has acquired screen rights to "Black Dahlia Avenger," a book by ex-L.A. homicide detective Steve Hodel about his investigation into Hollywood's most infamous unsolved crime. Hodel, on a quest to discover who his father really was, came up with a picture of a brilliant, charming, Hannibal Lecter-like villain he believes may have killed a dozen people including aspiring actress Elizabeth Short who was found cut in half and posed in a bizarre manner. What makes the deal surprising is that the announcement comes two weeks before the release of Brian De Palma's "The Black Dahlia", an adaptation of the James Ellroy novel about the same incident. Ellroy in fact wrote the intro to Hodel's book. Ralph Pezzullo is set to write the script. Source: Dark Horizons

According to The Hollywood Reporter, George A. Romero will bring his zombies back once more in DIARY OF THE DEAD, an independent project he'll write and direct. This movie will hark back to the rough-edged style of the original NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD with echoes of another grassroots hit, THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT, following a group of college students making a horror movie who find themselves in the midst of a real undead plague, and begin filming the mayhem around them. Romero and his production partner Peter Grunwald will produce DIARY with Artfire Films. After the frustrations he experienced regarding the shooting and release of Universal's LAND OF THE DEAD, the director was adamant about doing this installment independently. "I was trying to convince Peter we could just run off and do it ourselves," he told the trade. Source: Fango

Moreover, during Sarah's journey, she often has visions of the Convents past, visions that it was the house of a young girl named Ninfa... In reality, he is utterly mad, and this madness seems to be present today (within the walls of the convent) where young Sarah lives..." NyMpha official subsiteSource: Twitchfilm
Director Christopher Nolan has gone on the record about the next Batman film, The Dark Knight, in one of his first interviews about the project. "The title has been chosen very specifically. It's quite important to the film," Nolan informed BetterThanFudge.com. The helmer coyly declined to elaborate further on that meaning, saying, "I'll leave that for people to infer." Nolan did address some of themes of the next installment. Whereas the first film addressed confronting fear and the meaning of justice versus revenge, The Dark Knight is "about things having to get worse before they get better." While he would not go into great detail about The Joker, to be played by Oscar nominee Heath Ledger in the sequel, Nolan did advise fans that Alan Moore's classic graphic novel The Killing Joke won't be the only influence on the sequel's depiction of the Clown Prince of Crime. "I also would point very much to the first two appearances of the Joker in the comic. If you look at where the Joker comes from there's a very clear direction that fits what we're doing very well," Nolan said. The rest of the interview can be found in the next issue of Mean Magazine. IGN FilmForce had a chance to sit down with Paul Sams today, Chief Operating Officer of Blizzard, and chat about a variety of subjects from the success of World of Warcraft, the impending expansion pack, and the upcoming Warcraft movie. Although Blizzard isn't ready to announce a screenwriter or director yet, Sams said that he and Blizzard Creative Director Chris Metzen had been working closely with John Jashni, COO at Legendary Pictures, to lock down both important positions. Sams also told us that they had been working with Jashni for years, well before the Warcraft movie was greenlit, and that Jashni had been their primary contact in Hollywood when searching around for the possibility of a big-screen adaptation of the various Blizzard licenses. Stressing his confidence in Jashni, Sams told us, "With John, it feels like we're handing our baby over to a family member." While Warner Bros. is the primary studio behind the Warcraft movie, Legendary Pictures will be co-financing the affair. Although details are still shrouded in mystery at this point, Blizzard expects the Warcraft movie to have a budget well over $100 million. "Warner Bros. says this will be a tent pole movie for them," Sams explained, "a big, high-budget blockbuster that they expect to do very well and hold up the tent along with other big blockbuster movies that year." The indie zombie film; it seems to be what everyone’s trying to get right these days, but so few are able to do it. A combination of decent acting, good effects, and buckets of gore are what usually make for the more memorable of the bunch, however, and if nothing else Automaton Transfusion looks like it fills those last two criteria very well. The film is about three teens who find themselves in a town overrun by the hungry dead and decide to fight back instead of the typical hide-and-whine approach that you see all too often in the indies. The result, if the slew of pics just delivered to the doorstep of Bloody Disgusting are any indication, are messy to say the least. Directed by Steven C. Miller for just under $30,000 (!), Automaton Transfusion has been slowly building in hype for a while now, not only because it has one of the cooler titles in indie zombie history. Check out Bloody-Disgusting for more pics, and be sure to hit the flick’s official site for tons more info! Source: Dread Central
Malaysia are creating their very own (and first) superhero 'Cicak-Man'. The Malay film is to be produced by KRU Films and will be shot on true-HD (High Definition), with intensive use of CGI, motion control cameras and about 40% of the shots done on green screen. 'Cicak-Man' is set in the fictional city of Metrofulus and revolves around the lives of two best friends Hairi (Saiful Apek) and Danny (Yusry). One day Hairi unintentionally receives super powers and it is up to Danny to race against time to help find an antidote to help cure Hairi who is getting considerably weaker as his human cells are changing to the cells of a lizard. 'Cicak-Man', directed by Yusry Abdul Halim, stars some of Malaysia’s top actors and actresses such as Saiful Apek, Fasha Sandha, Aznil Nawawi, Aziz Satar and many more including Yusry himself. So far there are only behind the scenes stills on the official site, so we will have to wait for some trailer action to see what this is going to look like. The film opens in Malaysia in November. Mary Elizabeth Martino is as innocent as can be—until the 21-year-old virgin wakes up one morning to find herself impregnated…by a demon! That’s the premise of BORN, the latest feature from director Richard Friedman, whose career spans from the 1980s’ TALES FROM THE DARKSIDE, MONSTERS and FRIDAY THE 13TH series through the recent lycanthropicture DARKWOLF, and who passed on a couple of pics from his new movie. The evil fetus soon has full control over Mary, rendering her helpless to control its dark and homicidal urges, even to the point of murdering her own family. “It’s a cool little movie,” says Friedman about the indie production. “It’s a cross between THE EXORCIST, ROSEMARY’S BABY and THE OMEN about a woman pregnant with a demon’s child, the father of whom happens to be her brother! We’re shooting in 16 days, which is a challenge because there are a lot of effects and locations. BORN is a far better movie than DARKWOLF, though as bad as the CGI was in that movie, it was an enormous success for us on DVD. Our lead actress in BORN, a newcomer named Allison Brie, is amazing.” The script was penned by Alex D’Lerma (who acted in DARKWOLF), and a few familiar genre faces are among the supporting cast. Frequent Jason Voorhees actor Kane Hodder plays the demon. Denise (MORTUARY) Crosby, James Callahan, Eddie Velez, Joan (BLACK SCORPION) Severance and Rick McCallum (an actor/stuntman who doubled for Sid Haig in THE DEVIL’S REJECTS) also star. Source: Fango
PREY FOR THE BEAST, in which a scientific experiment gone wrong spawns a monster that breaks loose and terrorizes a team of weekend warriors and a group of young campers. Brett (BONESETTER movies) Kelly directs, stars and produces from a script by Jeff (INSECTICIDAL) O’Brien—though the two collaborated on-line, having never actually met in person! “The creature is really something to see,” says Kelly, who promises a movie that eschews digital FX for old-fashioned practical FX. Designed as a homage to Canadian backwoods horror films like RITUALS and HUMONGOUS, PREY will be accompanied by plenty of supplements on its eventual DVD release, including behind-the-scenes material and more. “Personally, I don’t consider an animated menu to be that special of an extra,” O’Brien comments. Chai-Lai Angels, Thailand’s ridiculously over the top version of Charlie's Angels is about to open in Singapore, but there it seems to have been renamed with the rather dull title of ‘The Dangerous flowers’. The 5 glamorous girls work as undercover secret agents, they have various disguises, they fight criminal organizations, they look good while delivering those high kicks, and even report to a "Bosley", the list just goes on. Filled with plenty of camp, jokes, implausible situations and crazy antics, you'd half expect the Angels to be slick, efficient, and deadly. Not so. Our leading ladies turn out on more than one occasion to be bumbling and completely ineffective. The storyline (little that it has) revolves around the girls defeating the evil plans of an arch villain and his gender–bending head henchman. The movie opens in singapore on August 24th. DAYBREAKERS, the long-time-coming follow-up project to UNDEAD from twin Australian film fiends the Spierig brothers, now looks like it’ll be shooting in their home state of Queensland early in 2007. “It all depends on cast availability and a few final bits of financing coming together,” Peter Spierig tells Fango of their plans for the vampire film, which won the support of Lionsgate when the brothers pitched it to the company some 18 months ago. In the intervening time, they’ve inched their dream project forward and managed to attract the interest and participation of New Zealand’s Weta Workshop, which recently put up a very interesting piece of artwork created for the film on its website (see it larger here). “There’s plenty more of those,” laughs Spierig, noting that Weta’s Oscar-winning Richard Taylor is a great supporter of DAYBREAKERS. Spierig also informs that Steven Boyle, who created the makeup FX for UNDEAD, is back for the new film and has set up shop at Weta for the project. Queensland producer Chris Brown, who has such films as THE LOCALS, KOMODO, HELLION (a.k.a. CUBBYHOUSE), ABERRATION and most recently the bloody Nick Cave-penned period film THE PROPOSITION in his filmography, joined DAYBREAKERS with his customary enthusiasm for horror six months ago. While an official start date has yet to be set, there’s no doubt that the team assembled so far is a formidable one. Spierig adds that Lionsgate seems more than ready to set up the brothers at the Queensland studio where the company’s SEE NO EVIL lensed in 2004. And in conclusion, he says that potential viewers should expect something “much darker and scarier than UNDEAD.” Source: Fango

The official website for G. Cameron Romero's The Screening is online; on that site are a downloadable trailer, downloadable behind-the-scenes video, and production stills gallery for the movie. (If you're not already aware of this, G. Cameron Romero - a.k.a. George Cameron Romero - is the son of George A. Romero.) The movie apparently stars Nikki McIntyre (a.k.a. Nikki Slit), Debbie Rochon, Anna Bridgforth, Sam Nicotero, Patrick Jordan, Jeff Monahan, Jennifer Bailey, and her twin sister Jessica Bailey. Here's a synopsis for The Screening from the MySpace official page for the movie: "A theater holds an underground screening of the 'Borgia' films, a murderous family's twisted idea of art. Art that hasn't been shown since the jury convicted the last in the family bloodline. Rumors of that jury's loss of sanity and the films being the cause bring attention to the event. An audience filled with morbidly curious patrons come from all over to see these alleged snuff films. Others come for different reasons. Some come looking for answers. Are the films real? Did the last people to see them go crazy? What will happen once the projector starts?" Below is a description of The Screening from the official website for the movie. "Do for the eye what the phonograph does for the ear." - Thomas Alva Edison, 1888 Thomas A. Edison gave birth to the motion picture with the invention of the "Kinetoscope". It created the ability to capture life and movement on film. Only it was the ability to capture death that interested Edison's unknown assistant Rupert Borgia. Hanged for the murders he committed to film, Rupert Borgia considered himself an artist. Coming from a family bloodline wrought with murdering Popes and ruthless dictators, Rupert lived up to his name. His art was death painted across a canvas of flesh. New Jersey, 1976. Almost 100 years later, Luther Borgia picks up where his ancestor unwillingly left off. Luther is accosted by law enforcement after a battered woman claimed she was kidnapped and tortured in the basement of his farm house. The police recover thirteen cans of used Super 8mm film, all containing footage of his depraved acts. Rumors leak from within the legal proceedings that anyone found watching the footage became psychologically unsound. The footage is then played for the jury at Luther Borgia's trial. Regardless of said rumors, the films are shown to the members of the jury. To this date no comments have been made from anyone in that courtroom on the events that followed. Thirty years after the trial, the Lewton Theater has planned an event. Hundreds of special invitations have been sent. Live music and dancers are scheduled. A band named "Borgia", that stands for everything that Luther Borgia was, is put on the bill as hosts. Certain VIP members of the press are brought in to cover the event, an event that revolves entirely around the Borgia name. It's the first opportunity since the trial and execution of Luther Borgia to screen the films that he and his infamous ancestor so passionately created. No one knows who organized the event. No one knows if the rumors surrounding the films are true. No one seems to have the answers... "By entering the Lewton Theater, you hereby absolve all those associated with this evening's event from any liability in regard to your health, state of mind or any force majeure that may result in personal injury or damage to yourself or your belongings..." The official website for D.J. Evans' Daddy's Girl is online; on that site are a trailer and stills gallery for the movie. The screenplay for Daddy's Girl was written by Evans. The movie stars Richard Harrington as Stephen, Jaime Winstone as Nina, Louise Delamare as Liz, and Mark Lewis Jones as Eisner. Below is a description of Daddy's Girl from the official website for the movie. "Daddy's Girl" is a chilling psychological horror feature. Heavily influenced by cult Japanese horror, the film uses striking imagery to tell this dark, haunting story. Stephen (Richard Harrington) is a psychiatrist struggling to hold his life together. Enduring perpetual grief over the violent death of his beautiful wife, his life is fraught with pain and tragedy. Surviving only through his copious intake of prescribed drugs, Stephen is anxious to return to work. When a close colleague at the hospital takes pity on him and reinstates him as Duty Psychologist, Stephen is soon confronted with a troubled teenage girl called Nina (Jaime Winstone). With an obsession for cutting herself and a seemingly increasing blood-lust, Nina displays sinister behaviour which begins to push the boundaries of teenage angst. Are her actions merely a symptom of an unhappy home life or are they rooted in a much more sinister cause? Set in bleak and ominous locations, "Daddy's Girl" will drag you through seduction, manipulation, wilful betrayal and a haunting that refuses to desist. "Daddy's Girl" exploits the increasingly blurred distinction between psychosis and reality. It explores the fragile relationships between people and the explosive metamorphoses that comes with adolescence. It is a film that asks questions that you do not always want to know the answers to. Dread Central asked "The Grudge 2" actress Amber Tamblyn about the recent rumors that she may be cast in the role of Laurie Strode in Rob Zombie's upcoming "Halloween" remake. Her response? "I've been hearing about these rumors too, and no one has approached me about doing the film. Would I do it? F*ck yeah, I would" she says. As for the poor reviews from a recent test screening of "The Grudge 2"? She responds "Yeah, I heard it is going to go through a complete re-edit, and there were also major issues with the ending I guess. I'm leaving for Chicago in two weeks to do some re-shoots on it". Television’s hit trip into the realm of the weird, SUPERNATURAL, returns for its second season on the new CW network beginning Thursday, September 28. Series heartthrobs Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki are back at the wheel as they do battle with evil, but this fall they’ll be doing it with a little help from a spirited horror vet: Fango has learned that THE EXORCIST’s Linda Blair will be joining the cast late next month for a special guest role. Specifics are slim, but apparently she’ll be playing a detective who somehow teams up with the Winchester brothers. Word has it that the character was written with Blair specifically in mind. The actress has been sorta absent from the genre scene since the horror-lite MONSTER MAKERS in 2003 (also for TV) and continues to work with the animal-rights group PETA. Familiar horror faces who crossed the Winchesters’ path last season included veteran actor Steve Railsback, Nicki (JEEPERS CREEPERS 2) Aycox, Amy (ANGEL) Acker, Julie (BUFFY) Benz, Brendan (GINGER SNAPS sequels) Fletcher, Ken (FREDDY VS. JASON) Kirzinger, and A.J. (THE FORSAKEN) Buckley. Source: Fango
British director Christopher ( CREEP) Smith tests his (literal) comedic chops with SEVERANCE. Danny Dyer and Laura (THE FACULTY) Harris star in this horror/comedy about a group of workers from the European sales division of a major weapons company who are sent on a team-building trip to the mountains. What they don’t expect is to come under attack by a group of war-crazed, vengeance-seeing maniacs! Above is a peek at the poster being used to promote the film in the UK, where SEVERANCE opens August 25. Here's a crop of trailers for new Asian movies that have been making the rounds recently: CINDERELLA - a Korean horror movie, set to open in August 2006, about young girls who had plastic surgery turning up murdered. If you go to the website you can find the trailer by going to mulimedia (on the far right at the very very bottom - you may not even be able to see it on your monitor) and click on trailer 2. Or else you get lost in an endless maze of Flash animation and creepy sound effects. SHIVA - Ram Gopal Varma's crime film made its North American last night at the Egyptian Theater in Los Angeles. And here's a second, less brutal, trailer for the movie that should whet your appetite. BRAINWAVE - this ultra low budget sci fi film from Korea looks like it could either be really fun or really lame. Check it out hereSource: Kaiju Shakedown

August 25th marks the HK region three release of Re-cycle – the latest horror to reunite the Pang Brothers with Angelica Lee. The film will be presented in an anamorphic widescreen format with Mandarin and Cantonese audio. Furthermore, optional English subtitles will be provided. The single disc release will have an English subtitled audio commentary. Those opting for the two disc special edition can expect making of featurettes, deleted scenes, extra CG shots, soundtrack and more. Bonus goodies include a lenticular badge and eyeball key-ring. Synopsis:The Pang brothers return with another horror movie Re-Cycle which closed Cannes Film Festival's "Un Certain Regard" section. This visually impressive piece stars Angelica Lee who first worked with the Pang brothers in The Eye. She plays a popular author who falls into a eerily beautiful world when writing a supernatural thriller. The Pang brothers employ new CG technologies to create abandoned slums which resemble Hong Kong's long-forgotten demolished walled city, imagined color-drained hills and forests, and a suffocating tunnel with embryos hanging from above. The first half of the film delivers plenty of suspense in the same style as other Pang brothers' film. However, the second half of Re-cycle, mostly an RPG-like adventure, innovatively weaves into the exquisite setting a sense of spookiness. Angelica Lee is Ting-yin, a popular author who is stuck with her writing and keeps discarding her ideas. She starts to sense her apartment being haunted. When she steps out of her building, she arrives in a mysterious world where she comes across characters she has created and abandoned. An old man (Lau Siu Ming) tells her that she must go to "The Transit" to leave this place, and a little girl (Tsang Nga Kei) accompanies her to go through one desolate world to another in this inexplicable space... The film concludes with a surprising twist which one will appreciate if he or she follows the clever plot closely. The sophisticated narrative structure, which at times mixes fiction and reality, makes the film more interesting than what is expected from a normal horror film. Thematically speaking, the attraction of Re-cycle lies in the notion of abandonment. Ideas discarded and memories forgotten, no matter by an individual or a community, will return to haunt you. Sheri confirms the rumor during an interview with SheriMoonZombie.net where she tells them, "All I can tell you is I am not playing Laurie Strode!" Internationally celebrated Korean director Kim Ki-duk has announced that should his latest film "Time" do poorly at the local box office, it will be his last that is sold for domestic release. Although the director's films, such as " The Bow" and "3-Iron" have enjoyed success overseas, as well as winning a number of awards at international film festivals, they have been largely ignored at home, and have been subjected to what he feels is unjust criticism. Kim has also stated that he will not allow his films to be entered at Korean film festivals, presumably offering them up for foreign distribution where they are likely to be picked up on the strength of his name alone. Speaking at a press conference for "Time", he expressed worries for similar small films, comparing their treatment with that of Bong Joon-ho's "The Host", which has been hugely successful and which some have said has recieved unfairly wide distribution. Louisville, KY was once written up in Playboy as having one of the most prominent hardcore music scenes in the United States. But with THE BOX currently shooting in Louisville, the city’s independent artistry seems to be more focused on filmmaking—horror in particular. THE BOX, a J-horror-influenced indie with no relation to the in-development Richard Kelly/Eli Roth film of the same title, is one of several features to be shot in and around Louisville in the past few years—four of which have been horror-related.

The Rebel (Dòng Máu Anh Hùng) aka Heroic Blood is a Vietnamese action film with the potential for success at the local market. Budget at one million US, the film features a Vietnamese-American cast of Johnny Nguyen who plays a villian in Tom Yum Goong and Dustin Nguyen, who is probably best known for his role in the TV series, V.I.P. Here is the synopsis taken from Viet Nam news: The film, set in the early 20th century, follows a man named Cuong, who returns to Viet Nam after studying in France. He is employed by the French army to carry out a secret mission. In the process of his undercover work, he meets and falls in love with a female intelligence soldier for the resistance army. His life then takes an unexpected turn.According to the unofficial trailer, the film is schedule for released in December. On a related note, Bo Lac Sieu Nhi (Super Small Tribe), another Vietnamese action film is schedule for release this year. To shoot the action scenes, the director cast only the ones with a strong martial art background which is a comforting thought. Perhaps we will see Vietnam become a major player in the action genre. A remake of The Last House on the Left, the 1972 horror classic that established Wes Craven as a filmmaker, is being developed at Rogue Pictures for production in early 2007. Craven and longtime producing partner Marianne Maddalena will produce the new version with the original film's producer, Sean S. Cunningham. Rogue co-presidents Andrew Karpen and Andrew Rona made the announcement yesterday. Rogue will hold worldwide rights to the remake, for which a director is being sought. The new film will hew closely to the plot of the earlier version, which tracked the fate of a group of murderers as vengeful parents of the victims mete out punishment to fit the crimes. Another of Craven's early works, The Hills Have Eyes, was recently remade; Craven co-produced the remake with Maddalena and Peter Locke. That film became a boxoffice hit earlier this year; a sequel, written by Craven and his son Jonathan, is in production for release by Fox Atomic in March. Martin Weisz is directing the sequel, which is again produced by Craven, Maddalena, and Locke. Karpen and Rona said, "We're excited about working with this talented team of filmmakers to create a new take on this seminal movie that will scare the wits out of a whole new generation of filmgoers." A gallery of 54 frames from Michael J. Bassett's Wilderness has been added to the director's website. (There already was a gallery of 135 production stills from the movie on it.) The movie had its world première at the 24th Brussels International Festival of Fantastic Film (BIFFF) in Belgium on March 19th. Momentum Pictures released it theatrically in the U.K. on August 11th. Description of Wilderness from the Fantasia Festival website:"Vicious bullying leads to the suicide of a timid inmate at the Moorgate Young Offenders Institute. Authorities who had been all too willing to turn a blind eye in the past are now forced to take action in the most visible way possible. Their solution is to pack up everyone who had resided in the dead boy's dorm - an assembly of violent sociopaths, repeat sex offenders, white-power skinheads and armed robbers - and send the entire lot 'outward bound' to a deserted island for a part of their sentence. This in itself might not be so terrible, but the juvie criminals walk into a situation that is worlds more punishing than any disciplinary board could ever have concocted. Someone else is on the island with the prisoners. Someone very, very sadistic. From the gruesome ingenuity of his attacks, it would appear quite likely that this person has had extensive military training. Even worse, this man seethes with a mean streak both wider and crueler than anything his prisoner prey can muster. Through a series of terrifying acts, the hunter makes it absolutely clear that he was a friend of the dead inmate's. And that the terminally tormented teen's blood will be repaid with theirs... in rivers. ¶ Equal parts DELIVERANCE, FRIDAY THE 13TH, S.C.U.M. and LORD OF THE FLIES, this intense, smartly-scripted survivalist slasher adventure film will bungee-drop you off the edge of your seat and bash your skull into crimson mountain sludge. UK filmmaker Michael J. Bassett, along with his eclectic ensemble cast (which includes THE DESCENT's Alex Reid and DOG SOLDIERS' Sean Pertwee), has made something truly sensational: an engrossing genre hybrid that plays against conventions to deliver a consistently surprising avalanche of ferocity. Although shot with a proper budget and seasoned cast, this is nonetheless guerilla filmmaking in a most literal sense. Actors and crew were forced to work under grueling environmental conditions throughout the film's Northern Ireland shoot, lending much to the primal energy on-screen. This is Bassett's second full-on genre film following his atmospheric World War I shocker DEATHWATCH. With WILDERNESS, he has proven himself to be a major talent in the new wave of British horror cinema." A 93-minute version of it was screened in competition at the Yubari International Fantastic Film Festival (Yûbari Kokusai Fantasutikku Eigasai) in Hokkaido, Japan on February 24th and 25th of this year. The principal cast of Id is as follows: (Kei) Fujiwara, Kimihiko Hasegawa, Kenji Nasa, Baiken Jukkanji, Yoshiaki Maekawa, Yasuyuki Mineta, Shôzô Tôjima, Sayaka Kai, Yukari Endô, Hiroshi Kitano, Eiji Hayashi, Masamitsu Mizuguchi, Chatarô Takahashi, Norio Shindô, Juri Shiina, Masami Akimoto, Ryô Ôkubo, Sakae Yamazaki, Daisuke Miyaji, Masanobu Asakawa, Yûki Awano, Mito Awano, Kikuzô, Noriaki Kawasaki, and Yamato Yasumura. Fujiwara was also the screenwriter, production designer, cinematographer, and editor of Id. She similarly was also the screenwriter, co-production designer, cinematographer, and lead actress of her 1996 movie Organ (Orugan). Synopsis for Id:"A man known as the 'Murderer' wanders through the woods. The sound of water flowing deep underground fills his head. Within the sound of the subterranean water flowing through the 'id', the realm of the subconscious mind, the 'Voice of Someone' becomes audible. The man emerging from the woods was captivated by that voice, engulfed in a raging storm and carried along by the swollen waters of a river until picked up and taken to a small steel factory in a town near the river. In front of that factory, which adjoins a pig farm, an ancient water course has been sealed with a giant spigot. The man is resonant with the 'id' water sounds of that sealed water course. Before long, incidents gradually begin to occur that affect the frugal occupants of the factory, until one morning they discover the body of the head of the factory, who has been beaten to death. The perpetrator is a female employee of the factory, and in fact it was her voice that had beckoned that man there. The hatred and sadness that those two had resonated in the realm of the 'id' brings about the appearance of the 'Humanhog' monster, which emits a rotten stench. Around that time, as if summoned by destiny, the ex-Detective that has been pursuing that man finally arrives in that factory town…" Id trailer (Japanese w/ English subtitles; downloadable 5.6 MB WMV file) Id official subsite (Japanese) Source: Twitchfilm
Those clever folk at Sega were evidently paying attention to the success of BMW's series of promotional short films, so they've gone out and done something similar. To launch their new game Yakuza Sega have hired a quartet of directors to helm short live action films laying down the game's back story. The first comes courtesy of Japanese maverick Takashi Miike - who is credited as 'integration director', whatever that means - and is online now. Yakuza shorts (embedded Flash) Source: Twitchfilm
The massive Korean domestic hit "King and the Clown" is to have its international premiere at the 31st Toronto International Film Festival, which runs September 7th to 16th. The film, along with its fellow countryman, the unconventional relationship drama "Family Ties" has been entered in the Discovery Section, where they will both screen in competition against 11 other features from countries around the world. Other Korean films showing at the festival are Kim Ki-duk's "Time" and Bong Joon-ho's all-conquering summer hit "The Host", which will be screening in the Midnight Madness section. Source: KFC Cinema
Over on the official Cineclick Asia website there's a write-up about their monster movie, THE HOST, which continues to suck up all the money in Korea. In their write-up they say that THE HOST will be released in the US in Spring, 2007. This is very different from the original news that it would hit American screens later this year, but since it's making its North American premiere at the Toronto Film Festival (in September) and some people have said that this is Magnolia's chance to see how an audience reacts to give them ideas about marketing, then a Spring release makes far more sense than a Winter release. Mary McCormack (late of The West Wing) is joining the cast of 1408, Dimension Films' big-screen adaptation of the Stephen King short story. McCormack will portray the ex-wife of the film's protagonist, who will be played by John Cusack. Samuel L. Jackson also stars as a hotel manager. The Hollywood Reporter says 1408 follows "Mike Enslin (Cusack), a debunker of paranormal occurrences who encounters real terror when he checks into the notorious Room 1408 at the Dolphin Hotel." Filming begins this summer in the U.K. for a May 2007 release. Mikael Hafstrom (Derailed) will direct from a screenplay by Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski (Ed Wood). 1408 is being produced by Lorenzo di Bonaventura. Source: IGN FilmForce

It's Lance Henriksen's third time to star in a movie about Bigfoot, and this time the movie's called Devil on the Mountain. Directed by Steven R. Monroe (House of 9, It Waits), the film also stars Cabin Fever's Cerina Vincent, Trancer hunter Tim Thomerson, Opie's dad Rance Howard, Body Double star Craig Wasson, and high kicking ex-"Acapulco H.E.A.T." co-star Michael Worth. Now, because the folks in charge of the Sci-Fi Channel are smarter than you or me, they've changed the film's title. Apparently concerned that viewers will either be turned off by the prospects of a movie about a devil on a mountain or because they worry that viewers will be upset if they tune in to watch the film only to find realize that the monster is a Bigfoot and not an actual devil... or perhaps they just want to make sure to pull in the Bigfoot enthusiast demographic out there, the Sci-Fi Channel has changed the film's title to the less ambiguous Sasquatch Mountain. The Sci-Fi Channel premiere of Sasquatch Mountain is slated for Saturday, September 9th at the usual start time of 9/8 Central with a midnight repeat to follow and another replay the following Wednesday night also at 9/8 Central. In Marvel Studios Analyst Day Webcast, the company's senior executives revealed its agenda and goals for their slate of upcoming comic book movies to analysts and investors. Marvel's plan is to self-finance two movies per year beginning in 2008, with seven projects currently in development as part of that ambitious slate. The presentation's biggest revelation was that X-Men movie vet Zak Penn will script the live-action feature film version of The Avengers. Also on the radar for Penn is the Universal-based Hulk 2, which is expected to be Marvel's second major release in 2008 after Iron Man. Louis Leterrier will direct. Key members of the production team for director Jon Favreau's Iron Man movie were named. J. Michael Riva (Spider-Man 3) will serve as production designer, Oscar winner John Nelson (Gladiator) will be the VFX Supervisor, and Matthew Libatique (Inside Man) will act as the director of photography. The presentation confirmed that Ant-Man will feature not one but two versions of the Marvel character, with small time criminal Scott Lang stumbling upon a supersuit once worn by Dr. Hank Pym. Edgar Wright is attached to direct. Thor, which is being written by Mark Protosevich (I Am Legend), will have the Norse god of thunder banished to live as a human amongst mortal men. Marvel's self-financed slate also includes feature film versions of Captain America (scripted by David Self) and Nick Fury (scripted by Andrew Marlowe). Source: IGN FilmForce

August 17th marks the region three release of A Bloody Aria, courtesy of South Korean label HB Entertainment. The film will be presented in an anamorphic widescreen format and boasts Korean audio in Dolby Digital 2.0, 5.1 and DTS 5.1. Furthermore, optional English subtitles will be provided. Supplementary materials will be spread over two discs and include an audio commentary, pre-production footage, making of documentary, character information, short film, style featurette, deleted scenes and promotional materials. Read A Bloody Aria movie review right hereSynopsisPicture this situation: a professor, his attractive young student, and a white Mercedes. He simply wanted a nice weekend drive in the countryside with his favorite student - but he quickly discovers that sometimes people can be scarier than ghosts. What seemed like his own One Fine Spring Day turns into a Korean-style Deliverance, complete with angry, crazy country bumpkins. And then it just becomes a miserable day for everyone involved. Extremely violent, sadistically comic and just oozing creativity from every corner, Won Shin Yeon's second film A Bloody Aria continues one of the most important trends in recent Korean Cinema, that of mixing elements from different genres and adding a little (wicked) humour on the side. Whereas his debut The Wig was a producer-driven horror film heavy on the visuals, A Bloody Aria is pure, unadulterated raw energy. Its script created huge buzz in the industry, when it won an important contest in 2004. And with a cast like that, it's no surprise the performances carry the film: Han Suk Kyu plays a villain for the first time in his career, and eternal second-liners Oh Dal Soo (Oldboy, Sympathy For Lady Vengeance) and Lee Moon Shik (A Big Match, Mapado) get the chance to show their considerable talent. A Bloody Aria is certainly not for the weak of heart, but it's probably one of Korea's most unique black comedies since The Humanist. Source: DVD Active

Here's the first details on the storyline for the upcoming "Hellboy" movie sequel: "Hellboy is chasing down some monsters and comes right across a news crew; the secret is out and the FBI has to eat crow and go public with their secret unit. This puts a lot of pressure on Hell and Liz, who were already expriencing serious problems. When Hell doesn't do much of a good job coming off for the public, a suave character named Johann is brought it. He's dressed like an old detective and has a glass bubble for a head that's filled with what looks like gas. In some weird manifestation, Johann is actually free energy, more or less, contained in a suit. Johann delights Liz, who's tired of Hell's brash behavior (shades of the previous film), but the gang has to team up to fight a rogue Prince. He's the son of the King of the woodland ghouls, a group of "monsters" that include gnomes, trolls, fairies, tooth fairies, and all other minor imps that roam through the forest. A long time ago there was peace between the humans and the woodland creatures, but then there was a war. To win the war the King conjured the Golden Army, a group of metallic soldiers that were invincible. Sadly, he couldn't control them, and the Army ended up killing innocent human women and children. The King split the key that controlled the Army into three pieces and buried them across the globe. Now the Prince wants the war renewed and has captured two of the pieces of the key. The last piece is held by his sister, the Princess, and the Prince is out to capture her. Unfortunately for him, Abe has fallen in love with her...so Helboy and the crew have to protect her and stop him". Source: AICN

The Korean site for the Japanese disaster flick 'The Sinking of Japan' is now up and running. As is often the case it's a damn sight easier to navigate than the Japanese version. There's also a ton a of great new posters to be seen here. For those not familiar with the film here's a brief synopsis: Japan has just received its death sentence. In less than a year, the island nation will sink! Earthquakes, tidal waves and volcanic eruptions roil the country, leaving millions dead and stranded. Japans only hope lies with one plan and one man! 'The sinking of Japan' has some spectacular looking effects, and made huge takings in its home country. The critics apparently weren't as kind as the general public, but hey its a disaster movie not Macbeth. Sinking of Japan (Official Korean site) Source: 24framespersecond.net
According to The Hollywood Reporter, DEAD master George A. Romero will script and direct SOLITARY ISLE, based on a short story by Japanese horror author Koji (RINGU) Suzuki, for Hyde Park Entertainment and Kadokawa Pictures. The source tale, published in Suzuki's DARK WATER anthology that also spawned the Japanese and American films of the same title, is about a teacher who joins a trip to a manmade island in Tokyo Bay—where one of his friends claims to have dumped his girlfriend, who died there—and the horrors they encounter once they arrive. ISLE is the first product of a pact between Hyde Park and Kadokawa (the company that publishes Suzuki and many of his genre contemporaries in Japan) to co-finance horror films budgeted under $25 million; distribution is likely to be handled by 20th Century Fox, which has a first-look deal with Hyde Park. Kadokawa is also backing Eric Valette's currently lensing remake of ONE MISSED CALL that stars Edward Burns, Shannyn Sossamon and Gabriel Byrne. Source: The Hollywood Reporter via Fango
Genre vet Bill (THE DEVIL’S REJECTS) Moseley dropped Fango a line about his role in the upcoming chiller HOUSE, which reunites him with REJECTS co-stars Leslie Easterbrook and Lew Temple. Moseley stars as Stewart, the evil proprietor who runs an isolated inn with his wife Betty (Easterbrook) and their demented son Pete (Temple), and can “see” his victims’ darkest fears and secrets. “When two stranded couples come to call, the mayhem begins,” the actor tells us. “HOUSE is the Roach Motel of horror: People check in, but they don’t check out!” Michael (SPECIES) Madsen also stars, with Robby Henson directing in Lodz, Poland for producer Ralph Winter and Namesake Pictures. HOUSE is based on a novel by Christian-lit genre specialists Frank Peretti and Ted Dekker, whose previous books include the biblical chiller THE VISITATION and the serial-killer opus THR3E respectively. Both novels were previously filmed by Namesake with Henson at the helm; THR3E also shot in Lodz and featured Moseley, along with Marc (THEY) Blucas, Justine Waddell and yet another REJECTS vet, Priscilla Barnes. Virginia-based writer/director/producer Robert Elkins gave Fango the first word and photos from BACKWOODS, a “no-budget horror movie” he just wrapped. “The plot may not seem very original—masked killer stalks lost teens in the Virginia backwoods—but I really feel we have done it right,” Elkins tells Fango. “I’m a firm believer that even without a budget, as long as you have a dream and the desire… you can make a quality movie. Slasher-in-the-woods movies are a dime a dozen, but this one has something more. It pays homage to the early FRIDAY THE 13TH movies and HALLOWEEN, with a dash of THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE. I hope the audience will be entertained and thrilled by the fast-paced plot and gory makeup effects. “The movie was shot on mini-DV for less than $1,000,” reports Elkins. “The story opens with a group of young friends helping Carrie [Carrie Keller] mourn the loss of her father by taking her to visit his grave in a remote cemetery. On the return trip, they get lost, and while trying to get directions, they become stranded at an old mansion they think is abandoned. The group splits up to explore the grounds and surrounding woods while sorting out their own personal issues. Before long, they realize they are not alone as someone begins killing off the trespassers one by one. The survivors scramble to escape the backwoods before the masked killer picks them off. The local sheriff, a.k.a. the town drunk [Jerry H. Long], is little help when it comes to light that the killings are nothing new and that he has his own dark secret.” Elkins plans to enter BACKWOODS in festivals very soon. Source: Fango

FilmFocus.co.uk spoke exclusively with Christian Bale about The Dark Knight, the sequel to last year's Batman Begins, and got his thoughts on his new co-star, Heath Ledger. Bale and Ledger are currently working together on the Bob Dylan-themed film "I'm Not There". "I like, very much, that it doesn't have Batman written in the title. This take on Batman of mine and Chris' is very different from any of the others and everything else always had Batman in the title," Bale advised the site. The surprise casting of Ledger as The Joker has left some fans scratching their heads but Bale approves of him. "Heath is very much into what Chris had done with the first one and he's very passionate about the role," Bale revealed. "And he's a really good actor so we're going to see something very special from him." Not content with merely cleaning up at the box office, with more than 4 million tickets sold already, Bong Joon-ho's "The Host" is helping Korean environmental groups in their ongoing protests against pollution from U.S. military bases. The groups have stated that they hope that the film will help spread awareness about the dangers of toxic pollution being dumped into rivers, something which is apparently all too common in the country. The film features a mutant which is created after the U.S. army (Boo! Hiss!) dump toxic fluids into Seoul's Han River, and was actually inspired by the true story of Albert McFarland, a civilian mortician of the U.S. Forces in Korea, who ordered the dumping of formaldehyde into the river in 2000, but was for some reason later released on bail. With Rob Zombie's upcoming remake/reimagining of Halloween due out October 19th, 2007, one of the biggest questions when Zombie made it clear that he was distancing his film from the original was how different the music would be. One of B-D's intrepid readers discovered the answer over on the official site for Tyler Bates, who will be handling the score for Halloween. The goods news is that iconic theme is in place, unaltered and still creepy as hell. Bates has basically taken Carpenter's original theme and given it a bit more "oomph". Some slightly disturbing news reared its head over at the official site for Profondo Rosso, the Rome-based horror store who deals with a lot of Dario Argento's personal goods. But first, the good news... The site reports that Asia Argento has agreed to star in The Mother of Tears, the third and final in Argento's long-gestating Mothers trilogy. This can only mean good things for both the director and star, and should put to rest all those rumors that the two weren't talking to one another because she passed on a role in The Card Player to work on her second directorial effort, The Heart is Deceitful Above All Things. Now for the bad news; shooting on The Mother of Tears has been delayed to November or later. Though the site says specifically "next November", we can only hope that does not mean November of 2007, because that's a long time for Argento to go without directing something. Granted, his Masters of Horror episode, "Pelts", is what we'll see from the man next, but hopefully things will smooth out and Tears will start late this year. Source: Dread Central

Writer/director Tim Sullivan prefers to stay vague, but he will say this much: A sequel to his gore-drenched romp 2001 MANIACS is in the planning stages. “The movie will be called 2002 MANIACS: BEVERLY HELLBILLIES,” chuckles Sullivan as he drops a hint or two. “Basically, it’s the maniacs from the first film taking Pleasant Valley on the road to somewhere in California. The lunatics are heading west in search of gold and gore.” The fragment of storyline that Sullivan is willing to divulge involves the sheriff plowing over all the detour roads through Pleasant Valley. “So the maniacs figure if the guests won’t come to them, they have to go to the guests. They pack up everything, take their best murderers along, travel to California and set up a Pleasant Valley Traveling Road Show.” Sullivan, who will direct from a script he claims is already completed, reports that an official announcement of the particulars of 2002 MANIACS: BEVERLY HELLBILLIES will be made on August 11, during a midnight screening of 2001 MANIACS at the Nuart Theater in West Los Angeles (11272 Santa Monica Boulevard). A brand-new 35mm print will be shown, and Sullivan and his cast and crew will be on hand to answer questions and give away special prizes. Click here to order advance tickets. It’s a busy season for Sullivan, as SNOOP DOGG’S HOOD OF HORROR, which he co-wrote and co-produced, is gearing up for its limited theatrical run beginning November 3 ahead of a DVD release in February 2007. And DRIFTWOOD, the ghost story set in a kid’s detention camp that Sullivan penned and directed and had a successful first screening at the San Diego Comic-Con, will premiere on MTV prior to the release of an unrated DVD next January. One of the more, for lack of a better word, troubled J-horror adaptations to reach the screen is PULSE, based on Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s highly regarded chiller (a.k.a. KAIRO). And now that the film is locked in for an August 25 release (yes, kids, that marks yet another bump, from the previous Aug. 11 berth), director Jim Sonzero is opening up about his introduction to the project, its history of reshoots and ultimate PG-13 rating... There's another trailer up online for Su Chao-pin's SILK, the horror movie from the writer of Taiwan's hit horror flick DOUBLE VISION. Ignore the horrifying Mr. Movie Mouth voiceover and soak up the trippy visuals instead. Although SILK was largely ignored at Cannes this year, don't forget that, as the sharp-eyed reader who sent in the trailer link pointed out, so did ELECTION and DOUBLE VISION (and CITY OF VIOLENCE for that matter). All is not lost. There could still be a good movie in there somewhere. Click here to check out the trailer. Source: Kaiju Shakedown
Lionsgate has come out with two announcements, one somewhat surprising and one completely not. The former is that they’ve picked up the heavily hyped but underwhelming An American Haunting for DVD release on October 24th. Supposedly a retelling of the "true" story of the Bell Witch haunting, An American Haunting will come in both rated and unrated cuts with deleted scenes, a making-of documentary, an interview with the director and Sissy Spacek, a blooper reel, and more. On the unsurprising side of things, Lionsgate has also officially announced Saw II: 2-Disc Uncut Edition for release on the same day. Along with being Darren Lynn Bousman’s preferred cut of the film, the set will feature commentary with Leigh Whannell and James Wan; another with Bousman, production designer David Hackl, and editor Kevin Greutert; a bunch of making-of featurettes; a tribute to the late, great Greg Hoffman; Bousman’s short film "Zombies"; and a lot more. You may recall the rather significant announcement a few months back that founder and editor-in-chief of Rue Morgue Magazine, Rodrigo Gudino, would be leaving his post at the magazine to write and direct films, something he had been striving for his whole life. Then, for a long time, we heard nothing...until now. Gudino’s first short film, "The Eyes of Edward James", is not only completed, but it has been accepted as part of the final list of 38 short films (down from the 560 entered) to make its premiere at the prestigious Toronto International Film Festival, which runs from September 7th-16th. "The Eyes of Edward James" is the Hitcockian story of a patient whose doctor regresses him into the traumatic memory of the evening his wife was brutally murdered. As more and more of the truth comes out, however, Edward’s doctor begins to question if James is being entirely honest with him, much the same way Edward’s wife was not as honest as she let on. Richard Underhill (Blue Murder), Tal Zimmerman, Shala Kareen-Palmer, and Robert C. Fidler star in "The Eyes of Edward James", which marks Gudino’s debut behind the camera. He’s set to shoot another short, "The Demonology of Desire", later this year and will be starting his first feature in 2007. Be sure to hit the official site for the TIFF for updates on when and where the film will be shown. Source: Dread Central

As a follow up to last year's blockbuster Batman Begins, Christopher Nolan is set to direct Warner Bros. Pictures' The Dark Knight, written by Jonathan Nolan, based on a story by Christopher Nolan and David Goyer. The film will be produced by Emma Thomas, Charles Roven and Christopher Nolan. Additionally, Christian Bale will resume his role as Bruce Wayne and Academy Award nominee Heath Ledger has been cast as The Joker. The announcements were made today by Jeff Robinov, President of Production, Warner Bros. Pictures. Christopher Nolan revamped the Batman franchise in 2005 with the immensely successful Batman Begins, starring Christian Bale in the title role, which chronicled the early years of the superhero. Nolan first garnered attention from critics and fans in 2000 with the groundbreaking drama Memento, which he wrote and directed. He went on to direct the thriller Insomnia, starring Al Pacino and Robin Williams, and recently wrapped production on The Prestige, with Hugh Jackman and Bale. Bale was most recently seen in the ensemble cast of Terrence Malick's The New World. His other credits include Little Women, Portrait of a Lady, Metroland, American Psycho, Laurel Canyon and Steven Spielberg's Empire of the Sun, which was his first starring role. Ledger most recently earned Oscar Golden Globe, BAFTA and SAG Award nominations and won the New York Film Critics Circle Award for Best Actor for his portrayal of Ennis Del Mar in the award-winning drama Brokeback Mountain. His other credits include Casanova, Monster's Ball, Lords of Dogtown, The Brothers Grimm and The Patriot. "Chris' unique vision is what made 'Batman Begins' such an outstanding film and we could not imagine anyone else at the helm of 'The Dark Knight,'" said Robinov. "We also can't wait to see two such formidable actors as Christian and Heath face off with each other as Batman and The Joker." "I'm excited to continue the story we started with 'Batman Begins,'" added Nolan. "Our challenge in casting The Joker was to find an actor who is not just extraordinarily talented but fearless. Watching Heath Ledger's interpretation of this iconic character taking on Christian Bale's Batman is going to be incredible." Production is set to begin on The Dark Knight in early 2007.
